Panniers:

The major decision for panniers is hard (ie aluminium boxes) or soft (ie fabric). As I intend to do a lot of off-road travel, I have opted for the soft style. Hard luggage is heavier but will also vibrate more, and off-road that means that all of the shocks will be transmitted to the bike's frame. Also, in an accident, hard luggage is more likely to trap and break a foot or leg. These are 'Andy Strapz Expedition Pannierz', which are tough and waterproof, which should help keep my kit clean and dry.
